A Quick Fix to Some Annoying Computer and Software Problems

With cries of help regarding the Internet Explorer startup message, it was essential that some computer fixes needed to be responded to – and fast! Here are just a few fixes to some annoying software and computer problems that may be able to help you if they ever happen (God forbid) to you.

The Dreaded Internet Explorer Error Message at Startup

Have you ever had this error message pop up on your screen causing you to pull your hair because you just can’t figure it out?

Cannot find ‘File:///’. Make sure the path or internet address is correct

This is a terribly bothersome problem that seems to eat at us every time it happens. The most probably explanation is that Windows is looking for a program that you either recently installed, or recently uninstalled. Basically, it can’t find the program, making it give you this kind of message. The best solution for you would be to find out what is trying to run on your PC while it is booting up. You can do this by setting up a sort of startup monitor that will tell you exactly what you need to know. This way, once you can pinpoint the item that is connected to you Internet Explorer issue, then you can immediately disable it and get on with your life.

For those who have more experience in solving technical issues, you may also try to use the Autoruns free utility. This is readily available on the TechNet website of Microsoft. When you are finished running this utility, you can check out the results on the Logon tab. Here you can see any problems relating to iexplore.exe which you can deselect. After deselecting this, reboot your computer and see what happens.

Another solution would be to run the msconfig utility that is available on windows. Go to the Startup tab and then go to the Command column which will display lines that will contain iexplore.exe files. The moment that you find one of these files, deselect it and then reboot your PC.

Finding Lost form Data Efficiently When Using Firefox

This problem happens when you are filling out a form online, using firefox, and when you are done and click Save or Next, your browser suddenly gets and error and crashes in front of your unbelieving eyes! This is one nightmare you want to avoid, especially if those online questionnaires are so tedious to fill out, over and over again.

But with the entry of the new Firefox add-on, Lazarus, you can recover your data quickly and efficiently with no more tears! This add-on is available for the Firefox 3.5 version, also known as System Restore. Basically, Lazarus will securely and automatically save the different keystrokes that you do while you fill in the online form. If your browser crashes, all you would have to do is make a right click on the form and choose Recover Form or Recover Text. This nifty tool will definitely save you some time and headaches!

Learning the Limitations on a Free OCR Service

With the wonders of software development and technology, today, scanning flat files and turning them into text is no longer a step that anyone needs to go through. Instead, you can now directly turn words embedded in a PDF, TIFF, JPEG, GIF, or BMP file into actual text that you can manipulate to your heart’s content with free web-based OCR software! However, there are certain limitations that get to be annoying, especially if you are enjoying the use of the service and suddenly you find out that there is not much you can do with some of the features.

Some of these limitations are you have to avoid using documents that are heavily formatted, especially since this freeware doesn’t support columns. Also, the free OCR suggests a resolution of 150 dpi and limits file size to only 2 megabytes – which isn’t much room for anything really. In the end, how much you will get out of this free OCR software will depend on your images and what resolution they come in. Despite all these limitations though, one can’t help but think: how nifty is that?

Hastening a Slow Netbook Running on Windows XP

With the release of netbooks, being mobile and staying connected to the Net could never have been easier. But netbooks run on lower powered processors and come with less memory. This, in turn, affects the overall speed of any netbook, which really gets to many netbook users who just want to make things fast!

The best solution to speeding up your netbook would be to lessen some of the heavy operating system features that take up precious processing time and resources. To get the optimal speed on your netbook, first, go to the Control Panel and double click on System. Then you can click on the Advanced tab, and in the Performance section, click on the Settings button.  On the visual Effects tab you will see a recommendation that is set to a default setting which says: Let Windows choose what’s best for my computer. You do not want this, so switch to: Adjust for best performance. By doing this, you will disable the visual effects of your Windows XP operating system.

At the end of this process, you may end up with a netbook that doesn’t have the exciting and stimulating visual effects that it normally had before. However, it will definitely and noticeably speed up when you do your work and run your applications!
